Significant magnitude 6.1 quake hits 130 km south of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Russia after midnight Just 11 minutes ago, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Kamchatka, Russia. The tremor was recorded after midnight on Friday, January 23rd, 2026, at 12:42 am local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 66. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 6.1 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.8, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 6.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Vilyuchinsk (pop. 25,200) located 115 km from the epicenter, Paratunka (pop. 1,800) 119 km away, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy (pop. 181,200) 130 km away, Ozernovskiy (pop. 2,600) 143 km away, and Yelizovo (pop. 40,700) 144 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
