Magnitude 3.8 earthquake strikes near Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico, USA

Just 13 minutes ago, a 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico, USA. The tremor was recorded early evening on Saturday, January 24th, 2026, at 6:55 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 6 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.8 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Dell City (pop. 350) located 41 miles from the epicenter, and Van Horn (pop. 1,900) 50 miles away. In Carlsbad (pop. 29,000, 52 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
