Significant magnitude 5.8 earthquake 72 km west of Kalamansig, Philippines

A shallow magnitude 5.8 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat, Soccsksargen, Philippines.
According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Wednesday, January 28th, 2026, at 4:38 pm local time at a shallow depth of 29. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.6. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kalamansig (pop. 12,800) located 72 km from the epicenter, and Dinaig (pop. 116,800) 105 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Cotabato (pop. 383,400) located 112 km from the epicenter, Malingao (pop. 1,122,000) 130 km away, Isulan (pop. 101,500) 132 km away, Midsayap (pop. 117,400) 137 km away, and Tacurong (pop. 116,900) 140 km away.
