Small magnitude 2.8 quake hits 48 km southeast of Joue-les-Tours, France late at night A magnitude 2.8 earthquake near Joue-les-Tours, Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire, France, was reported only 5 minutes ago by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5. km beneath the epicenter late at night on Thursday, February 12th, 2026, at 10:19 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.7. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Saint-Hippolyte (pop. 560) located 2 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chatillon-sur-Indre (pop. 2,900) located 7 km from the epicenter, and Loches (pop. 7,100) 13 km away. In Saint-Avertin (pop. 16,000, 46 km away), Saint-Pierre-des-Corps (pop. 15,300, 47 km away), Joue-les-Tours (pop. 37,500, 48 km away), Tours (pop. 141,600, 50 km away), and Chateauroux (pop. 53,300, 51 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
