Small magnitude 3.5 quake hits 26 km northwest of Podgorica, Montenegro in the evening

A very shallow magnitude 3.5 earthquake was reported in the evening near Podgorica, Montenegro.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Sunday, March 8th, 2026, at 9:08 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 7.20 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH), which listed it as a magnitude 2.8 earthquake. A third agency, The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kujava (pop. 130) located 1 km from the epicenter, and Danilovgrad (pop. 5,200) 11 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Spuz (pop. 1,200) located 16 km from the epicenter, Niksic (pop. 58,200) 20 km away, Cetinje (pop. 15,100) 26 km away, Podgorica (pop. 236,900) 26 km away, Dobrota (pop. 5,400) 28 km away, Risan (pop. 2,100) 30 km away, and Mojanovici (pop. 1,800) 33 km away. In Trebinje (pop. 33,200, 58 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
