The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 9. km beneath the epicenter near Namrole, South Buru Regency, Maluku, Indonesia, in the evening on Sunday, March 8th, 2026, at 8:46 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Namrole (pop. 21,500) located 65 km from the epicenter.
