Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes near Waingapu, Kabupaten Sumba Timur, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 5.0 quake in Indonesia near Waingapu, Kabupaten Sumba Timur, East Nusa Tenggara, only 5 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Wednesday, March 11th, 2026, at 5:45 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 37. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Waingapu (pop. 35,900) located 32 km from the epicenter, and Ruteng (pop. 41,500) 112 km away.
