Magnitude 5.5 earthquake strikes near Buenaventura, Departamento del Valle del Cauca, Colombia An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred only 6 minutes ago 49 km northeast of Buenaventura, Colombia, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 104. km beneath the epicenter near Buenaventura, Departamento del Valle del Cauca, Colombia, in the morning on Thursday, May 14th, 2026, at 7:48 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Darien (pop. 15,800) located 49 km from the epicenter, Buenaventura (pop. 240,400) 49 km away, Guadalajara de Buga (pop. 114,300) 67 km away, Tulua (pop. 221,700) 68 km away, Buenaventura (pop. 432,400) 77 km away, Yumbo (pop. 71,400) 81 km away, Palmira (pop. 312,500) 95 km away, and Cali (pop. 2,392,900) 96 km away.
