Moderate magnitude 4.6 quake hits 28 km northwest of Catamarca, Argentina late at night Just 17 minutes ago, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Catamarca, Departamento de Capital, Catamarca Province, Argentina. The tremor was recorded late at night on Tuesday, May 19th, 2026, at 11:34 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Mutquin (pop. 1,200) located 14 km from the epicenter, and El Rodeo (pop. 1,100) 18 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Poman (pop. 3,400) located 22 km from the epicenter, Catamarca (pop. 159,100) 28 km away, Huillapima (pop. 7,800) 45 km away, San Antonio (pop. 4,300) 45 km away, and Capayan (pop. 6,400) 51 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Aimogasta (pop. 16,600) located 82 km from the epicenter.
