Small magnitude 3.6 quake hits 17 miles southeast of Kalifornsky, Alaska, United States in the afternoon

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.6 quake in the United States near Kalifornsky, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, only 4 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the afternoon on Wednesday, May 27th, 2026, at 4:16 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 41 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Kasilof (pop. 550, 14 miles away), Soldotna (pop. 4,500, 16 miles away), Funny River (pop. 1,100, 16 miles away), Cohoe (pop. 1,400, 16 miles away), Kalifornsky (pop. 7,900, 17 miles away), Sterling (pop. 5,600, 18 miles away), Ridgeway (pop. 2,000, 19 miles away), and Kenai (pop. 7,700, 23 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
