Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.0 just reported 16 km southeast of Mosfellsbaer, Iceland An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred around noon on Monday, June 1st, 2026, at 1:45 pm local time near Mosfellsbaer, Capital Region, Iceland, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3.50 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Mosfellsbaer (pop. 12,100) located 16 km from the epicenter, Mosfellsbær (pop. 8,700) 16 km away, and Hveragerdi (pop. 2,300) 16 km away.
