Magnitude 4.8 earthquake strikes near Dharamsala, Kāngra District, Himachal Pradesh, India

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in India near Dharamsala, Kāngra District, Himachal Pradesh, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Friday, June 5th, 2026, at 9:34 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pathankot (pop. 174,300) located 97 km from the epicenter.
