Moderate magnitude 4.2 earthquake 21 miles south of Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, was reported only 20 minutes ago by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles beneath the epicenter early evening on Thursday, July 9th, 2026, at 6:30 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Wedgewood (pop. 750) located 18 miles from the epicenter, Grande Prairie (pop. 70,400) 21 miles away, Westlake (pop. 1,400) 25 miles away, and Wembley (pop. 1,500) 25 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Clairmont (pop. 2,800) located 28 miles from the epicenter, Sexsmith (pop. 2,500) 34 miles away, Beaverlodge (pop. 2,300) 37 miles away, and Valleyview (pop. 1,900) 60 miles away.
