Small magnitude 3.0 quake hits 7 km southeast of Ceillac, France around noon A magnitude 3.0 earthquake near Ceillac, Hautes-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France, was reported only 5 minutes ago by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5. km beneath the epicenter around noon on Saturday, August 8th, 2026, at 12:42 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Ceillac (pop. 300) located 7 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Guillestre (pop. 2,400) located 15 km from the epicenter. In Embrun (pop. 7,100, 28 km away), Barcelonnette (pop. 3,500, 30 km away), Briancon (pop. 11,600, 34 km away), Pinerolo (pop. 30,900, 48 km away), Saluzzo (pop. 16,500, 52 km away), and Gap (pop. 42,700, 61 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
