The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Friday, August 7th, 2026, at 5:55 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 3.5 miles below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 2.8 earthquake as well. Weak shaking might have been felt in Saratoga Springs (pop. 25,400) located 4 miles from the epicenter, and Lehi (pop. 58,500) 5 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Riverton (pop. 41,900) located 8 miles from the epicenter, Draper (pop. 46,800) 9 miles away, and South Jordan (pop. 66,600) 11 miles away. In Sandy (pop. 87,500, 13 miles away), West Jordan (pop. 111,900, 14 miles away), Orem (pop. 94,500, 15 miles away), West Valley City (pop. 136,200, 20 miles away), and Salt Lake City (pop. 215,500, 25 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
