Small tremor of magnitude 2.8 just reported 5 miles southeast of Ontario, California, United States

An earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred around noon on Sunday, August 16th, 2026, at 1:35 pm local time near Ontario, San Bernardino County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Upland (pop. 76,400) located 7 miles from the epicenter, Corona (pop. 164,200) 10 miles away, Pomona (pop. 153,300) 10 miles away, and Fontana (pop. 212,700) 10 miles away. In Anaheim (pop. 350,700, 23 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
