Small tremor of magnitude 2.8 just reported 20 km northeast of Groningen, Netherlands The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 2.8 quake in the Netherlands near Groningen, Groningen. Municipality, Provincie Groningen, only 18 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Friday, August 21st, 2026, at 5:50 am local time at a very shallow depth of 3. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.8 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Doodstil (pop. 65) located 1 km from the epicenter, and Uithuizen (pop. 4,900) 2 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Delfzijl (pop. 28,600) located 18 km from the epicenter, and Groningen (pop. 244,800) 20 km away. In Hoogezand (pop. 21,500, 26 km away), Leek (pop. 19,700, 31 km away), Veendam (pop. 28,200, 35 km away), Winschoten (pop. 18,500, 37 km away), and Drachten (pop. 45,200, 48 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
