Moderate magnitude 4.8 earthquake reported 43 km southwest of Padangsidempuan, Indonesia Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 4.8 earthquake in Indonesia near Padangsidempuan, Kota Padangsidimpuan, North Sumatra, just 5 minutes ago. The earthquake occurred late at night on Friday, September 4th, 2026, at 11:24 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 75. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the earthquake may be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the earthquake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in the epicentral area. Weak shaking may have been felt in Padangsidempuan (pop. 236,200), located 43 km from the epicenter; Sibolga (pop. 91,300), 62 km away; Tarutung (pop. 39,500), 91 km away; and Barus (pop. 18,300), 108 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if they change and follow up if other significant news about the earthquake becomes available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more firsthand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this earthquake.
