Small magnitude 2.7 earthquake 21 km southwest of Argostoli, Greece A very shallow magnitude 2.7 earthquake was reported in the evening near Argostoli, Kefallonia, Ionian Islands, Greece. According to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab (AUTH), the quake struck on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 8:56 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chavriata (pop. 220), located 14 km from the epicenter. In Lixouri (pop. 3,800, 19 km away), Argostoli (pop. 9,800, 21 km away), Faraklata (pop. 1,100, 25 km away), Valsamata (pop. 1000, 28 km away), Sami (pop. 1,300, 37 km away), Poros (pop. 1,100, 43 km away), Ithaki (pop. 1,800, 49 km away), and Katastarion (pop. 1,400, 50 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
