Small magnitude 3.7 earthquake 23 km southwest of Catanzaro, Italy A magnitude 3.7 earthquake near Catanzaro, Province of Catanzaro, Calabria, Italy, was reported only 8 minutes ago by the Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA), considered the main national agency monitoring seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter on Wednesday morning, September 16th, 2026, at 7:04 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as a light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in San Vito Sullo Ionio (pop. 1,600), located 2 km from the epicenter; Soverato Marina (pop. 7,000), 11 km away; Catanzaro (pop. 79,000), 23 km away; Vibo Valentia (pop. 19,300), 29 km away; Lamezia Terme (pop. 70,500), 29 km away; Nicastro-Sambiase (pop. 55,700), 30 km away; and Sambiase (pop. 20,000), 30 km away.
