Small magnitude 3.3 earthquake hits near Traralgon, Latrobe (Vic.), Victoria, Australia

A shallow magnitude 3.3 earthquake was reported in the morning near Traralgon, Latrobe (Vic.), Victoria, Australia.
According to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the quake struck on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 9:43 am local time and at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also listed the quake at magnitude 3.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Woodside (pop. 350), located 2 miles from the epicenter, and Yarram (pop. 2,100), 9 miles away. In Rosedale (pop. 1,600, 26 miles away), Churchill (pop. 4,700, 27 miles away), Traralgon (pop. 26,900, 28 miles away), Longford (pop. 1,400, 28 miles away), Sale (pop. 14,300, 31 miles away), and Morwell (pop. 13,600, 31 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
