Magnitude 5.5 earthquake strikes near Las Tablas, Las Tablas District, Provincia de Los Santos, Panama The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.5 earthquake in Panama near Las Tablas, Las Tablas District, Provincia de Los Santos, just 17 minutes ago. The earthquake occurred around noon on Friday, October 9th, 2026, at 1:22 pm local time and at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the earthquake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed the earthquake at magnitude 5.8. Other agencies reporting the same earthquake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), at magnitude 5.8, and France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), at magnitude 5.2. Generally, earthquakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency, and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that arrive after the first one often showing greater accuracy. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the earthquake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in La Palma (pop. 1,100), located 16 km from the epicenter; Santo Domingo (pop. 1,800), 19 km away; Las Tablas (pop. 8,900), 20 km away; Guarare (pop. 3,200), 26 km away; and Los Santos (pop. 6,000), 41 km away. Weak shaking might have been felt in San Juan Bautista (pop. 11,800), located 44 km from the epicenter; Monagrillo (pop. 10,800), 47 km away; and Santiago (pop. 45,400), 96 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if they change and follow up if other significant news about the earthquake becomes available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this earthquake.
