Moderate magnitude 4.8 earthquake 57 km southeast of Taipei, Taiwan An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred just 22 minutes ago, 57 km southeast of Taipei, Taiwan, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake struck at an intermediate depth of 118.80 km beneath the epicenter near Taipei, Taipei City, Taiwan, on the afternoon of Sunday, November 1st, 2026, at 4:20 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also listed the quake at magnitude 4.8. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.6, the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.6, and Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau (CWB) at magnitude 5.6. Weak shaking might have been felt in Jiufen (pop. 3,100), located 34 km from the epicenter; Yilan (pop. 94,200), 34 km away; Keelung (pop. 362,500), 43 km away; Xizhi (pop. 204,600), 45 km away; Neihu (pop. 274,500), 53 km away; Taipei (pop. 7,871,900), 57 km away; Banqiao (pop. 551,200), 62 km away; New Taipei City (pop. 4,004,400), 64 km away; Shulin (pop. 180,000), 66 km away; and Sanxia (pop. 115,200), 70 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if they change and follow up if other significant news about the quake becomes available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
