Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.1 earthquake 37 km south of Bucaramanga, Colombia Colombia was shaken near Bucaramanga, Departamento de Santander, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 only 6 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 157. km beneath the epicenter near Bucaramanga, Departamento de Santander, Colombia, after midnight on Monday, January 5th, 2026, at 12:35 am local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.8. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Curiti (pop. 11,700) located 22 km from the epicenter, Piedecuesta (pop. 163,400) 22 km away, San Gil (pop. 46,200) 26 km away, Floridablanca (pop. 267,600) 30 km away, Giron (pop. 108,500) 31 km away, Bucaramanga (pop. 581,100) 37 km away, Socorro (pop. 30,000) 40 km away, and Malaga (pop. 19,900) 43 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
