Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.5 just reported 60 km southeast of Kushiro, Japan

Japan was shaken near Kushiro, Kushiro Shi, Hokkaido, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 only 11 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 54. km beneath the epicenter near Kushiro, Kushiro Shi, Hokkaido, Japan, in the morning on Thursday, January 15th, 2026, at 8:13 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.5, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Akkeshi (pop. 8,900) located 32 km from the epicenter, and Hamanaka-sakuraminami (pop. 5,500) 40 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kushiro (pop. 167,900) located 60 km from the epicenter, Nemuro (pop. 31,200) 73 km away, Nakashibetsu (pop. 24,000) 85 km away, and Shibetsu (pop. 21,700) 97 km away.
