Moderate magnitude 4.4 earthquake 24 miles north of Santa Rosa, California, United States A magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, USA, was reported only 2 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5.6 miles beneath the epicenter early morning on Thursday, May 7th, 2026, at 2:42 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Cobb (pop. 1,800) located 5 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Clearlake (pop. 15,200) located 15 miles from the epicenter, Windsor (pop. 27,500) 16 miles away, Santa Rosa (pop. 178,100) 24 miles away, and Rohnert Park (pop. 42,400) 31 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Agua Caliente (pop. 27,100) located 36 miles from the epicenter, Petaluma (pop. 60,400) 39 miles away, Napa (pop. 80,400) 43 miles away, and Novato (pop. 55,500) 48 miles away.
