When it comes to understanding how to wield a sword properly, it all comes down to understanding the different types of handles that the sword is made with in the first place. For each different type sword, there’s a different type of handle. This in turn will have a direct impact on the way that you hold it and thus, the way that you use it. One of the most popular types of swords is the sabre. This is a large sword, usually with a double edge, that has a rather large handle that your entire hand wraps around. There’s usually an extra piece on the handle that your hand fits between for extra support. This is one of the largest types of swords in existence and therefore, it requires a great deal of skill when it comes to handling it effectively. Another popular weapon is known as the long sword. If you want to imagine what this looks like, think about the swords that are frequently associated with the Crusades. This is also a very large sword, as the name implies. It’s typically held with two hands and has a cross bar on it that ensures that your hands do not go beyond a certain point. Because of its overall size and weight, it requires the use of a skilled sword handler. This is definitely not something that should be placed into the hands of just anyone. It requires a great deal of skill and hundreds of hours of practice to master. The next one we’ll look at is the Roman Gladius. This is more of a stabbing type of weapon and while still considered a sword in its own right, it’s much smaller and easier to handle than the aforementioned versions. As such, it’s typically held with a single hand and offers a certain type of versatility and flexibility that’s simply not available with the larger and more cumbersome designs. Many people hold it in much the same way that they’d hold a knife, except they usually hold it so that it can be easily maneuvered as opposed to holding it with a stiff arm and wrist. Finally, the Chinese Doa and the Khopesh are popular swords from different parts of the world. They’ve similar handles and while they’re both quite versatile, they are also large and often rather heavy weapons. They can be held with one hand or two, but a skilled swordsman will be able to handle them with a single hand and make them an extension on their own body. Now that you know more about the different types of swords and the ways that the handles affect their operation, you can decide for yourself which option works better. Much of it comes down to a matter of personal preference, but there’s no doubt that some types of swords are simply easier to handle. Source: Swords: The Handle Can Make A Difference
