Magnitude 4.3 earthquake strikes near El Cocoyult (Coacoyul), San Marcos, Guerrero, MexicoA magnitude 4.3 earthquake near El Cocoyult (Coacoyul), San Marcos, Guerrero, Mexico, was reported only 26 minutes ago by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Mexico. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter in the evening on Thursday 7 January 2021 at 9:00 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In El Cocoyult (Coacoyul) (pop. 690) located 1 km from the epicenter, La Estancia (pop. 160) 2 km away, El Carmen (pop. 110) 2 km away, El Carmen (pop. 110) 2 km away, El Cortés (pop. 1,200) 3 km away, Monte Alto (pop. 930) 5 km away, Llano de la Puerta (pop. 1,300) 5 km away, and San Marcos (pop. 13,300) 11 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Acapulco de Juarez (pop. 673,500) located 47 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
