Light earthquake of magnitude 4.6 reported 5 km northeast of Buena Vista, Mexico4.6 quake 25 Jan 8:36 am (GMT -6) Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported a magnitude 4.6 quake in Mexico near Buena Vista, San Luis Acatlán, Guerrero, 36 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Monday 25 January 2021 at 8:36 am local time at a very shallow depth of 9 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Buena Vista (pop. 2,300) located 5 km from the epicenter, El Rincon (Santa Cruz del Rincon) (pop. 2,400) 21 km away, and El Rincon (Santa Cruz del Rincon) (pop. 2,400) 21 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Cuanacaxtitlan (pop. 3,100) located 24 km from the epicenter, Yoloxochitl (pop. 3,200) 25 km away, Ometepec (pop. 24,100) 36 km away, Ayutla de los Libres (pop. 15,400) 59 km away, and Tlapa de Comonfort (pop. 47,000) 62 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
