Moderate magnitude 4.2 earthquake 40 km northeast of Patras, Greece 4.2 quake 8 Mar 3:56 am (GMT +2) Just 7 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Patras, Achaea, Western Greece, Greece. The tremor was recorded early morning on Monday 8 March 2021 at 3:56 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface. The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Spilia (pop. 45) located 7 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Aigio (pop. 20,400) located 15 km from the epicenter, Itea (pop. 4,800) 24 km away, Amfissa (pop. 6,900) 26 km away, Nafpaktos (pop. 13,400) 30 km away, and Patras (pop. 168,000) 40 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Livadeia (pop. 21,500) located 62 km from the epicenter, Lamia (pop. 52,000) 64 km away, and Agrinio (pop. 46,900) 72 km away.
