Significant magnitude 5.5 quake hits 97 km southeast of Arawa, Solomon Islands early evening

An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred only 13 minutes ago 97 km southeast of Arawa, Solomon Islands, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 59 km beneath the epicenter near Arawa, North Solomons, Papua New Guinea, early evening on Monday 29 March 2021 at 6:43 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Buin (pop. 750) located 43 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Panguna (pop. 2,900) located 94 km from the epicenter, Kieta (pop. 3,600) 95 km away, and Arawa (pop. 40,300) 97 km away.
