Magnitude 3.6 earthquake strikes near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA 3.6 quake 18 Aug 2:01 am (GMT -10) A magnitude 3.6 earthquake near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, was reported only 10 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 21 miles beneath the epicenter early morning on Wednesday 18 August 2021 at 2:01 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pāhala (pop. 1,400) located 6 miles from the epicenter, Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) 19 miles away, Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400) 26 miles away, Fern Acres (pop. 1,500) 29 miles away, and Mountain View (pop. 3,900) 30 miles away. In Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400, 38 miles away), Hilo (pop. 43,300, 41 miles away), and Kailua Kona (pop. 12,000, 50 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
