Moderate magnitude 4.4 quake hits 47 km south of Matsue, Japan early morning 4.4 quake 18 Aug 1:31 am (GMT +9) Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in Japan near Matsue, Matsue Shi, Shimane, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Wednesday 18 August 2021 at 1:31 am local time at a very shallow depth of 8.3 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Shobara (pop. 20,500) located 23 km from the epicenter, Miyoshi (pop. 39,300) 34 km away, Niimi (pop. 23,800) 39 km away, Izumo (pop. 89,300) 43 km away, Yasugichō (pop. 29,400) 44 km away, Hiratachō (pop. 28,200) 47 km away, Matsue (pop. 156,800) 47 km away, and Yonago (pop. 141,400) 49 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
