Magnitude 4.5 earthquake strikes near Niksar, Tokat, Turkey4.5 quake 21 Sep 7:09 pm (GMT +3) A very shallow magnitude 4.5 earthquake was reported early evening near Niksar, Tokat, Turkey. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Tuesday, September 21st, 2021, at 7:09 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 0 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Niksar (pop. 49,900) located 8 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Erbaa (pop. 52,200) located 26 km from the epicenter, Tokat Province (pop. 129,700) 40 km away, Kumru (pop. 32,200) 46 km away, Korgan (pop. 16,700) 49 km away, and Taşova (pop. 19,300) 49 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Turhal (pop. 110,900) located 70 km from the epicenter, and Ünye (pop. 77,600) 70 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
