An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred 32 minutes ago 40 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 2.6 miles beneath the epicenter near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, in the afternoon on Thursday, February 3rd, 2022, at 4:07 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.3.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Honaunau-Napoopoo (pop. 2,600) located 14 miles from the epicenter, Captain Cook (pop. 3,400) 18 miles away, Kealakekua (pop. 2,000) 18 miles away, and Honalo (pop. 2,400) 19 miles away. In Holualoa (pop. 8,500, 22 miles away), Pāhala (pop. 1,400, 22 miles away), Kailua-Kona (pop. 12,000, 25 miles away), Kalaoa (pop. 9,600, 28 miles away), and Hilo (pop. 43,300, 40 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
