The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 4.2 miles beneath the epicenter near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, in the morning on Sunday, February 13th, 2022, at 10:57 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pāhala (pop. 1,400) located 17 miles from the epicenter. In Volcano Village (pop. 2,600, 30 miles away), Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400, 30 miles away), Mountain View (pop. 3,900, 39 miles away), Hawaiian Acres (pop. 2,700, 40 miles away), Ainaloa (pop. 3,000, 41 miles away), Hawaiian Beaches (pop. 4,300, 44 miles away), Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400, 45 miles away), and Hilo (pop. 43,300, 51 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
