Significant magnitude 5.5 quake hits 98 km northwest of Aparri, Philippines around noon

Philippines was shaken near Aparri, Cagayan, Cagayan Valley, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 only 18 minutes ago, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 39.7 km beneath the epicenter near Aparri, Cagayan, Cagayan Valley, Philippines, around noon on Sunday, February 13th, 2022, at 12:36 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Namuac (pop. 3,000) located 59 km from the epicenter, and Claveria (pop. 10,600) 61 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Cabaritan East (pop. 9,300) located 85 km from the epicenter, Aparri (pop. 33,200) 98 km away, Laoag (pop. 102,100) 123 km away, and San Nicolas de Ilocos (pop. 34,200) 126 km away.
