Moderate magnitude 4.0 earthquake 21 km northeast of Mito, Japan 4.0 quake 8 May 9:29 am (GMT +9) An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred only 13 minutes ago 21 km northeast of Mito, Japan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 60 km beneath the epicenter near Mito, Mito-shi, Ibaraki, Japan, in the morning on Sunday, May 8th, 2022, at 9:29 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Funaishikawa (pop. 35,300) located 5 km from the epicenter, Hitachi (pop. 186,300) 12 km away, Hitachi-Naka (pop. 156,800) 13 km away, Katsuta (pop. 156,000) 14 km away, Ōmiya (pop. 27,600) 17 km away, Mito (pop. 246,500) 21 km away, Takahagi (pop. 33,600) 26 km away, Kitaibaraki (pop. 50,800) 35 km away, and Utsunomiya (pop. 449,900) 64 km away.
