Small magnitude 3.1 earthquake 8 km southeast of Izmir, Turkey 3.1 quake 5 Feb 9:18 am (GMT +3) A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported in the morning near Izmir, İzmir, Turkey. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Sunday, February 5th, 2023, at 9:18 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.1. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Karabağlar (pop. 458,000) located 5 km from the epicenter, Izmir (pop. 2,500,600) 8 km away, Menderes (pop. 22,000) 12 km away, Kemalpaşa (pop. 30,400) 22 km away, Torbalı (pop. 50,300) 27 km away, and Menemen (pop. 53,500) 30 km away. In Seferihisar (pop. 19,600, 34 km away), Urla (pop. 45,200, 36 km away), and Turgutlu (pop. 103,300, 48 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
