Magnitude 3.2 earthquake strikes near Westonaria, West Rand District Municipality, Gauteng, South Africa 3.2 quake 18 Feb 2:48 pm (GMT +2) A magnitude 3.2 earthquake near Westonaria, West Rand District Municipality, Gauteng, South Africa, was reported only 17 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Saturday, February 18th, 2023, at 2:48 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.2 as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Fochville (pop. 62,400) located 12 km from the epicenter, Westonaria (pop. 156,800) 16 km away, Carletonville (pop. 182,300) 24 km away, Randfontein (pop. 133,700) 32 km away, and Soweto (pop. 1,695,000) 33 km away. In Vanderbijlpark (pop. 246,800, 36 km away), Vereeniging (pop. 474,700, 39 km away), Roodepoort (pop. 326,400, 42 km away), and Johannesburg (pop. 2,026,500, 52 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
