Moderate yet deep earthquake of magnitude 5.2 just reported 69 km southeast of Espinar, Peru 5.2 quake 18 Feb 2:31 pm (GMT -5) An intermediate to deep magnitude 5.2 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Espinar, Provincia de Espinar, Cusco, Peru. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Saturday, February 18th, 2023, at 2:31 pm local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 183 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Jayune (pop. 4,300) located 23 km from the epicenter, Llongasora (pop. 4,800) 31 km away, Huarichancara (pop. 4,400) 32 km away, Ccolo (pop. 3,900) 34 km away, Jatun Orcochiri (pop. 4,400) 44 km away, Vizcachane (pop. 4,400) 48 km away, Espinar (pop. 23,900) 69 km away, Ayaviri (pop. 19,300) 86 km away, and Arequipa (pop. 841,100) 119 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
