SPC MD 548
MD 0548 CONCERNING HEAVY SNOW FOR PORTIONS OF WESTERN AND CENTRAL WISCONSIN INTO FAR WESTERN UPPER MICHIGAN

Mesoscale Discussion 0548
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1045 PM CDT Sun Apr 16 2023

Areas affected...portions of western and central Wisconsin into far
western Upper Michigan

Concerning...Heavy snow

Valid 170345Z - 170945Z

SUMMARY...Heavy snow is expected to increase through the night
across portions of western Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. 1-2
inch/hour snowfall rates are possible, especially in the 05-09Z
(12-4 AM CDT) time frame.

DISCUSSION...Mainly moderate snowfall rates have been observed
across portions of western WI over the past several hours as an 850
mb low meanders over the western Great Lakes. The 850 mb low is
expected to intensify just after Midnight CDT, resulting in
increased frontogenesis, which could increase ascent within a
near-saturated -12 to -17C dendritic growth zone. The latest
high-resolution model guidance depicts the enhanced frontogenesis
and associated heavy snow within a primary band across western
Wisconsin into extreme northern Michigan. Timing for the heaviest
snow (i.e. 1-2 inch/hr rates) appears to be 05-09Z.
