Magnitude 5.3 earthquake strikes near Arequipa, Provincia de Arequipa, Peru 5.3 quake 62 km north of Arequipa, Peru, Jun 2, 2023 8:49 pm (GMT -5) An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred in the evening on Friday, June 2nd, 2023, at 8:49 pm local time near Arequipa, Provincia de Arequipa, Peru, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.3. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Pujulli (pop. 42) located 11 km from the epicenter, and Huarancante (pop. 4,600) 13 km away. In Pucara (pop. 4,300) located 18 km from the epicenter, and Cono Norte (pop. 47,300) 54 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Selva Alegre (pop. 72,700) located 59 km from the epicenter, Arequipa (pop. 841,100) 62 km away, Ciudad Satelite (pop. 76,400) 66 km away, Jacobo Hunter (pop. 46,100) 67 km away, and El Pedregal (pop. 20,100) 90 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
