Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.1 just reported 21 km northwest of Andalgala, Argentina 5.1 quake 2 Jun 9:11 pm (GMT -3) Just 15 minutes ago, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Andalgala, Departamento de Andalgalá, Catamarca, Argentina. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Friday, June 2nd, 2023, at 9:11 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface. The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.1. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Andalgala (pop. 14,100) located 21 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Hualfin (pop. 2,300) located 46 km from the epicenter, La Puerta de San José (pop. 1,100) 49 km away, Puerta de Corral Quemado (pop. 1,600) 54 km away, Londres (pop. 2,600) 63 km away, Aguilares (pop. 32,500) 90 km away, San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca (pop. 188,800) 126 km away, and San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca (pop. 188,800) 126 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
