Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.0 earthquake 10 km southeast of Shingu, Japan
5.0 quake 21 Jun 8:33 am (GMT +9)

An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred in the morning on Wednesday, June 21st, 2023, at 8:33 am local time near Shingu, Shingū-shi, Wakayama, Japan, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a great depth of 411.6 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Shingu (pop. 31,600, 10 km away), Owase (pop. 22,000, 43 km away), Tanabe (pop. 69,600, 67 km away), Gojō (pop. 34,300, 81 km away), Hashimoto (pop. 57,100, 82 km away), Sakurai (pop. 63,000, 92 km away), Iwade (pop. 55,600, 94 km away), Kashihara-shi (pop. 124,500, 95 km away), and Osaka (pop. 2,592,400, 124 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
