Significant magnitude 5.5 earthquake 67 km northeast of Santiago de Chile, Chile 5.5 quake 9 Jul 2:11 pm (GMT -3) The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.5 quake in Chile near Santiago de Chile, Provincia de Santiago, Santiago, only 13 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Sunday, July 9th, 2023, at 2:11 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 71 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Chicureo Abajo (pop. 18,000) located 64 km from the epicenter, Santiago de Chile (pop. 4,837,300) 67 km away, Puente Alto (pop. 510,400) 70 km away, La Pintana (pop. 201,200) 73 km away, Lo Prado (pop. 104,300) 74 km away, Los Andes (pop. 56,900) 74 km away, San Bernardo (pop. 249,900) 78 km away, Lampa (pop. 29,300) 84 km away, Buin (pop. 55,400) 90 km away, and Peñaflor (pop. 65,500) 93 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
