Significant magnitude 6.4 quake hits 88 km north of Zapala, Argentina after midnight
6.4 quake 17 Jul 12:05 am (GMT -3)

An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 occurred after midnight on Monday, July 17th, 2023, at 12:05 am local time near Zapala, Departamento de Zapala, Neuquen, Argentina, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate to considerable depth of 161 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 6.4 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Loncopue (pop. 4,300) located 35 km from the epicenter, Las Lajas (pop. 4,700) 47 km away, El Huecu (pop. 1,400) 62 km away, Mariano Moreno (pop. 2,200) 72 km away, Chos Malal (pop. 11,700) 83 km away, Zapala (pop. 31,500) 88 km away, and Cutral-Co (pop. 47,400) 125 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
