Magnitude 4.1 earthquake strikes near Colima, Mexico 4.1 quake 8.8 km west of Colima, Mexico, Aug 15, 2023 11:19 pm (GMT -6) An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred late at night on Tuesday, August 15th, 2023, at 11:19 pm local time near Colima, Mexico, as reported by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 22.3 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in El Poblado (pop. 280) located 2 km from the epicenter, Ciudad de Villa de Alvarez (pop. 117,600) 8 km away, Colima (pop. 137,400) 9 km away, Comala (pop. 9,400) 11 km away, and Comala (pop. 9,100) 11 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tecoman (pop. 85,700) located 37 km from the epicenter, Armeria (pop. 15,900) 37 km away, Manzanillo (pop. 130,000) 58 km away, and Cd. Guzman (pop. 97,800) 63 km away.
