Significant magnitude 5.5 quake hits 32 miles southeast of Sand Point, Alaska, United States in the afternoon 5.5 quake 20 Sep 5:13 pm (GMT -8) An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred only 16 minutes ago 32 miles southeast of Sand Point, Alaska, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 15 miles beneath the epicenter near Sand Point, Aleutians East, Alaska, USA, in the afternoon on Wednesday, September 20th, 2023, at 5:13 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.5, The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) at magnitude 5.4, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.5. Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Sand Point (pop. 1,100) located 32 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in King Cove (pop. 1000) located 80 miles from the epicenter, Nelson Lagoon (pop. 52) 84 miles away, and Perryville (pop. 110) 85 miles away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
