Magnitude 5.9 earthquake strikes near Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan, Iran 5.9 quake Southern Iran Oct 17, 2023 8:40 am (GMT +3:30) Iran was shaken near Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 only 8 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan, Iran, in the morning on Tuesday, October 17th, 2023, at 8:10 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Devīn (pop. 10) located 11 km from the epicenter. In Bandar Abbas (pop. 352,200) located 50 km from the epicenter, Qeshm (pop. 25,000) 75 km away, Ḩājjīābād (pop. 23,300) 81 km away, and Mīnāb (pop. 70,800) 112 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
